What is the difference between Parent's Choice milk-based and soy-based infant formulas?

The protein in Parent's Choice milk-based baby formulas comes from cow’s milk that has been heat-treated, making it easy for a baby to digest. The sugar or carbohydrate in milk-based formulas is lactose, unless specifically manufactured as lactose-free.

Parent's Choice soy-based formulas are milk-free and lactose-free, and the protein in these formulas comes from a soybean source that is also easy for a baby to digest. If a baby exhibits signs of lactose intolerance or certain allergic reactions to milk protein, the physician may recommend a soy-based formula to help treat these conditions.

A baby with confirmed milk protein-induced colitis could also be sensitive to soy protein and might be given an extensively hydrolyzed formula, one in which the protein has been predigested so it will decrease the likelihood of a reaction. Parents who seek a vegetarian-based diet for their healthy baby may want to discuss the use of soy-based formula with their pediatrician.

What does ISO-9001 mean?

Parent's Choice infant formulas are manufactured by PBM Nutritionals in the only ISO 9001:2000–certified, infant formula–manufacturing facility in the United States. Located in Georgia, Vermont, PBM Nutritionals adheres to the stringent set of quality-assurance regulations set by the International Organization for Standardization.

ISO-9001 represents the international standard of operations for quality assurance. According to the ISO Web site:

"ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is the world's largest developer of standards. Although ISO's principal activity is the development of technical standards, ISO standards also have important economic and social repercussions. ISO standards make a positive difference, not just to engineers and manufacturers for whom they solve basic problems in production and distribution, but to society as a whole."

What makes Stage 2 formula different?

The main difference with our Stage 2 baby formula is that it contains slightly more protein and calcium than our term baby formulas. When a baby reaches four to six months of age, his or her needs change because of changing growth patterns. Around this time you also may begin to wean the baby onto solid foods. Often, these early foods are low in protein and calcium, so more is added to the formula they will consume during that time period. Parent's Choice 2 should not be used before four months of age.

What is the whey-to-casein ratio?

The whey-to-casein ratio for the milk-based formulas is 60/40.  The soy based formulas do not contain casein or whey and derive their protein from soy sources.

Do Parent's Choice infant formulas contain cholesterol?

Parent's Choice milk-based formulas contain less than 1 mg of cholesterol, while Parent's Choice soy-based formulas do not contain any cholesterol.
